Junior Leaders

Cadets wishing to be promoted and climb the ranks ladder must first start with this course. It is a week long course that teaches cadets the basics of being a Junior Leader. Courses are held during the school holidays during the year and are split into three areas across the country. Cadets from Western Bay of Plenty Cadet Unit can expect to go to the Northern Area Courses which are held in Auckland. Cadets are required to have attended cadets for at least a year and have met certain criteria.

Senior Leaders

Cadets wishing to be promoted further (to Sergeant and Staff Sergeant) are required to attend this course. This is also a week long course held around the same time as the Junior Leaders course also in the same area. Cadets will be taught what is to be required to be a leader in Cadet Forces at a more senior level. Cadets are required to have passed the Junior Leaders Course to attend this course and should have met certain criteria to be considered for promotion.

Advanced Leaders

Cadets who are wanting to take more responsibility in the Unit, either by assisting with Administration, Training, or becoming the Unit Warrant Officer (known as the Company Sergeant Major ro CSM) should attend this course as it teaches cadets more advanced leadership principals as well as more advanced Instructional Techniques. This course is 10 days and is generally held once a year at times that could vary. It is usually held between the start of Dec and the end of Jan. The Unit Adjutant will keep cadets posted on the dates for this course. This course is generally held in Auckland.

Junior Outdoor Leaders

Cadets that would like to experience more Bushcraft skills should apply for this course. It will give cadets Outdoor Leadership skills at a Junior level. Cadets are required to have completed the Junior Leaders Course. This course is held twice a year. Once over the January holidays in Blenheim at RNZAF Base Dipflat and once at Waiouru in April.

Senior Outdoor Leaders

Cadets that would like to further their outdoor experiences should attend this course. Completion of this course provides the cadet with the NZ Mountain Safety Council Outdoor Leader Award (issued upon reaching age 18). It builds on the Junior Leaders course but at a more senior level. Courses are held also at the same time as the Junior Outdoor Leaders. Cadets are required to have completed the Junior Outdoor Leaders and the Senior Leaders Course.

Army Experience

Cadets who are thinking about joining the Army as a career can apply to attend this course. This course is a week and will take cadets around the various Army establishments in New Zealand and look at the vaiours trades. Cadets who are interested in joing the other forces can also apply for Air Force Experience or the Navy Experience but priority is given to cadets applying from their respective corps.
As numbers are limited on these courses, cadets have to apply to attend these courses. Priority is given to cadets who show potential in achieving well and progressing and have shown good attitude and support to the unit.
From time to time, there are other occasional one off courses and exercises that can be applied for that cadets may attend. Further information is usually found on the Unit Noticeboard.
